Nonenal, a natural compound created when skin oils oxidize, has a greasy or musty smell. It usually starts after 40, when the skin’s antioxidants decline with age. The catch:you often cannot smell it on yourself. Your nose adapts to it. Other people’s noses do not.
Why is it expensive?

- Real fermented kakishibu. Cheap bars use persimmon fragrance or a splash of juice. Kakiyu uses the concentrated tannin extract that actually breaks down nonenal.
